BOOK REVIEW
THE STORY OF RAMA by Narendra K. Sinha, Xlibris, USA reviewd by ANSingh
In my article 'TOWARDS THE STANDARDIZATION OF ENGLISH: THE GLOBAL TONGUE'in IJELL (Vol.1, No.1, Spring 2009) I'm introducing a new nomenclature for English, ENGLISH: THE GLOBAL TONGUE and proposing needs and measures for the standardization of English.
ReplyDeleteI would like to request all those involved in the propagation of English to react to my proposal. Kindly comment. Thanks.
Rajkamal Shiromani, Editor-in-Chief, IJELL & Founder President & MD, ICLL (International Congress of Language and Literature
THE STATUS OF ENGLISH IN INDIA
ReplyDeleteIn the last swearing ceremony of the Council of Ministers, out of 20 ministers (including the PM) only 4 (four) out of 2o (twenty) took oath in Hindi, India's National Language. When 80% of the Central Cabinet Ministers, including those from the Hindi belt, take oath in English, any one can guess the importance and status of English in India. Kindly share your views.
Some of the Haikus & Tankas published in IJELL (Vol.1 No.1 Spring 2009)
ReplyDeleteHaikus
You and I Alone
You and I alone;
two bodies in flames, burning;
purifying the soul.
.
You and I alone;
should we, shouldn’t we; if yes, why?
And then surrender!
You and I alone.
The desire to touch and feel
the soul through body.
The room was a sea
and the bed, a row-less boat
beyond our control.
You spoke with your flesh
and I listened with my dry soul.
You won and I lost.
Battle of lips and
our bodies entwined, embraced.
Who remembers time?
It’s the time, my love!
Don’t pretend, be honest and straight.
You need me, I you.
We ran for a roof;
thunder, lightening, heavy downpour.
How sudden, how fast?
So strong was the urge
that we forgot everything.
No shame, no guilt, Bliss!.
Providence again.
We met and had only moments
to curse or be lost
.
And what happened then
was a shower of burning light
in an all dark room.
And we – you and I
were one for a while that night
you were me, I you.
Tankas
There’s always a fight
between the well-armed body
and the shocked poor soul
praying the rival
all success in war.
Reading in between
the contours of your body
lost concentration
and fell in the deep valley
of blissful showers.
Your charming body
and unparalleled contours;
the intoxicating breeze
full of your odour;
I’m wordless, my dear.
We live in a world
of uncertainties and chaos,
fear, tear, and terror.
Who is safe and secure here
and lead life with peace?
‘Truth’ and ‘Non-violence’
Words to be found in archives-
all mutilated.
This is a world of violence
and live volcanoes.
O Morality!
Where and why are you hiding
so shocked and ashamed
to see your new incarnation?
Please don’t leave the world.
Where are you, O God!
Wake up from your ‘samadhi.’*
Open your ‘trinetra’*
and see for yourself the chaos
ruling the earth unchecked.
All dark, past midnight
The music of the forest
is so enchanting!
Dry leaves falling with the snow.
Storm, thunder, and me.
The bright moon dancing
with the high tide in the sea
and playing hide n seek
with clouds in a dense forest;
Nature, you are great!
The Sun is beautiful,
be it morn, noon, or evening.
Source of our energy,
How calm is the mid-day Sun
even in Summer!
Still alive, how and why?
The pain is so unbearable;
suppressing each desire
and killing each sentiment,
smiling for the world.
How do you manage
to befool the world around ?
A live volcano
melting within, looks so calm,
cold, and beautiful!

There is an age old saying that a man is known by the company he keeps but what I feel is that A MAN IS BETTER KNOWN BY THE LANGUAGE HE SPEAKS.
I also feel that what the world needs most is a pinch of faith and love. Thanx.
Shiromani
Respected sir,
ReplyDeleteThe title, English the New Tongue,is apt and relevant in the context of globalisation. The age old saying that a man is known by the company he keeps but what I feel is that A MAN IS BETTER KNOWN BY THE LANGUAGE HE SPEAKS is highly inventive and innovative.
Respected sir,
ReplyDeleteYour haikus present depths of soul-searching and ultimate realities of life.
A Pradeep Kumar
Thanks Professors Laxmi Prasad and Pradeep Kumar. Please keep sharing your views on this IJELL blog. Thanx also for your mail.
ReplyDeleteIt is officially said that English is the L2 (second language) in India. But I strongly feel that in this multi lingual country, English is L3 (third language) for the majority of Indians. Please comment. Thanx
